教學目標及特色 This summer English writing course intends to equip students with fundamental skills of writing English for academic purposes. Topics to be covered include basic English sentence structures and common patterns for English paragraph writing.
At the end of this course, students will have acquired the following writing ability:

評量方式及評分標準 Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must prepare the assigned homework prior to class and, while in class actively participate in class discussions and pair/group work. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

Attendance and Participation
Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.
 

Topic & Concluding Sentence Group Practice

In groups, students are required to write topic and concluding sentences for corresponding paragraphs. Sentences will be analyzed by the teacher, as well as their peers in class. The best sentence for each of the paragraphs will be chosen among the groups. The teacher will evaluate all sentences from the groups when scoring.

 

Paragraph Writing

Students are asked to write a complete paragraph including all the elements that were addressed in class. At least one form of a citation must be used in the paragraph writing. The piece will be evaluated and graded by the teacher based on the structure, content, and language usage of the paragraph. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment.

 

Cause and Effect Writing

Students are asked to write a complete cause and effect paragraph using a block format. The paragraph should contain different types of supporting details that were elaborated in the course. Citations should be used. This writing will be evaluated and graded by the teacher based on the structure, content, and language usage of the paragraph. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment.
 

Final Exam:

Students will be tested on the content that was covered throughout the course. The test includes a paragraph unscramble section to check students understanding of transitions used in a process essay. The sentence rewrite section tests students’ ability in the grammar structures that were highlighted in the lectures. A third section examines whether students are able to identify and analyze different sections of a paragraph. The final section of the test will require students to write a paragraph from three given topics.
