教學目標及特色 This summer English writing course intends to equip students with fundamental skills of writing English for academic purposes. Topics to be covered include basic English sentence structures and common patterns for English paragraph writing.
 
At the end of this course, students will have acquired the following writing ability:
  • Paragraph and Essay Structure
  • Unity and Coherence
  • Enumeration Paragraphs
  • Classification Paragraphs
  • Chronology Paragraphs
  • Cause and Effect Paragraphs
  • Problem and Solution Paragraphs
  • Comparison and Contrast Paragraphs

評量方式及評分標準 Grading Criteria:
  1. Students are expected to do assigned readings BEFORE each class.
  2. Students will be required to do extra reading for discussion purposes.
  3. There will not be any make-up tests for midterm and final exams.
  4. Late assignments/homework will NOT be accepted.
  5. Regular attendance and participation in class activities such as pair work group discussion sessions and role-playing are mandatory.

Writing homework assignment 40%

Students are asked to write complete paragraphs including all the elements that were addressed in class. At least one form of a citation must be used in the paragraph writing. The piece will be evaluated and graded by the teacher based on the structure, content, and language usage of the paragraph. Examples and a rubric will be provided prior to the assignment.

 

In-class performance & Attendance 40%

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, homework preparation, and the contribution you make to the learning experience of others. Contribution includes your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments regarding class content, answers to the instructor’s questions, and reactions to other students’ contributions.

Final Exam 20%

Students will be tested on the content that was covered throughout the course. The test includes a paragraph unscramble section to check students understanding of transitions used in a process essay. The sentence rewrite section tests students’ ability in the grammar structures that were highlighted in the lectures. A third section examines whether students are able to identify and analyze different sections of a paragraph. The final section of the test will require students to write a paragraph from three given topics.
